Located 53km southwest of St Maarten , the island was discovered in 1493 by Christopher Columbus and over the following 150 years was claimed 22 times by different European nations until it was finally settle as a Dutch territory.

In 1756 the port city of St Eustatius called Oranjestad was introduces as a free port with no custom duties, making it the most important trading port for the West Indies Company and the entire Caribbean earning the islands nickname ‘The Golden Rock’. Now with a population of 3500, the charming islands capital is sub divided by the upper and lower town decorated by its rich history.From St Maarten, take a short yet exciting flight to St Eustatius F.D. Roosevelt (EUX) airport in just 18minutes with Winair. St Maarten Airport (SXM) has many connections from the USA, Canada and Europe, including regional connections with other Caribbean island destinations. Airlines include; KLM, Air France, Caribbean Airlines, LIAT, American Airlines, Continental Airlines, United and Copa.

There is also a ferry service which takes you St Eustatius via Saba from St Maarten and also from St Eustatius to St Kitts.
